It’s hard to keep up with who’s managing Yuja Wang in any given week, but if you want to survey the long trail of broken agents, read this.

In her last whirligig in December 2018, Yuja rejoined her first manager Earl Blackburn, now operating a small boutique, called Kanzen.

As of today, she has vanished from the Kanzen roster.

Bye, Earl.

See you again, maybe.

For the avoidance of doubt, let it be stated that Yuja Wang is a much misunderstood person.

Comments

  • Don’t worry Norman she will not vanish! She’s too frequently talented for playing piano and make the buzz. There’s still DG behind and a lot of marketing to make.

  • Calvin says:

A rare thing: a sensational show horse that is also an exceptional workhorse. Apologies for the metaphor, but perhaps this rare combination indeed causes misunderstanding.

    • yujafan says:

she doesn’t look or sound like any kind of horse to me, just a beautiful woman who happens to be a stellar pianist

    • Bruce says:

The horse analogy is apt in one way, at least: she’s a thoroughbred, one of those artists who belongs on a stage.

  • Rob says:

Perhaps it’s time to start “Norman Lebrecht TV” via YouTube. In depth interviews with classical musicians and power people. Miss Wang could be one of your first guests after you’ve chase her around the airport.

  • Calvin says:

To use another animal reference, this apparently was never exactly a case of “birds of a feather….” Yuja flies in a different stratosphere than everyone else on that roster.

  • Andrea Fell says:

Interestingly her website now also listed a new Assistant Manager at Intermusica. She gets through those agents fast.

  • Ludwig's Van says:

What’s so misunderstood about Yuja? She has everything, she’s never had to struggle, and so she behaves accordingly – like a spoiled child.

    • Mick the Knife says:

      right…born with technique, lucky girl

      • Sue Sonata Form says:

Technique born of many thousands of hours of lonely practice. My mother learned piano from early childhood and was at boarding school; at the end of her life she said it upset her thinking back to that lonely existence, locked up in the music room practicing all the time. She achieved at a high level on the piano, but it did come at a personal cost.

  • Caranome says:

Maybe for her everything is like her clothes. She goes thru phases of what she likes and can wear as she said, as long as she still has her body to show off her clothes. So all problems can be solved by a change of clothes, hairdo, and …agents.

  • Mark says:

Who dumped whom, one wonders …

  • Sue Sonata Form says:

On the contrary, I think many of us understand her very well.

  • Peter says:

What a funny expression Norman, “a much misunderstood person”.
Is that a way of saying that you don’t understand her, while suggesting that no-one else does either ?
Or are you saying that you understand her well enough to realise that others don’t ?

  • Mark London says:

Looks don’t always portray reality ! Beauty and skin deep stuff

  • HOMEWORK says:

She disappeared from the Kanzen roster a few weeks back, but at least one other artist also did. There are no artists with names beginning A thru F listed on his roster. Chance, or omission? Meanwhile Blackburn/Kanzen remained on YW’s own website contact list until the other day. An obvious typo on the Kanzen main page makes me wonder if all is well with Earl Blackburn. One hopes he is not sick.

Without wishing to invade anyone’s privacy, whatever the story may be, there’s not a hint of an explanation here so far.

  • Save the MET says:

As a World class musician said to me after reading a Yuja review, “I wish they would review the performance before reviewing her outfit.”

    • Dijon says:

Most critics listen with their eyes these days, as they aren’t musically literate or knowledgeable as they used to be….
