Yuja stuns London with late, late show

From a duty officer on the Slipped Disc night log:

The Barbican concert last night with Gautier Capucon started almost 15 minutes late. No explanation was announced but it seemed to the audience that it could have been a result of some sort of mishap to Yuja.

Looking gorgeous as always in a tight, literally sparking gown, she had hobbled onto the stage and didn’t risk the few stairs down from the stage at the interval.

Perhaps the Barbican isn’t her luckiest venue as she had a problem when appearing several years ago with the LSO. Sources reported that (on that occasion) a pre-concert massage was provided by a very happy, suitably qualified male member of the first violins.

  • Alexander says:

there is something of that iconic J-P Goude picture of Grace Jones in that Yuja’s image . Good for her 😉

  • Ben says:

Why do you have to specify ‘looking gorgeous as always’? What has this to do with her performance? Would you say it for any other performer…plus it’s Gautier Capuçon.

    • V.Lind says:

Okay, first we have the name wrong. Second — why do we assume the delay was down to her and not to him? Or some other reason?

An explanation would, of course, have been courteous. Maybe the organisers are more used to rock concerts.

  • Andy says:

    “Late, late”………….15 minutes?!

  • Been Here Before says:

They were all right, but nothing special. You can hear better chamber music at Wigmore Hall most weekends.

She could barely walk due to her high heels.

They didn’t start letting people into the hall until five minutes before the performance was supposed to start.

  • The piano today it’s not only miss Wang and Lang Lang pfff… There are more pianists of this generation who deserve more media attention here, there, everywhere. Ex : Beatrice Rana, Seong-Jin Cho Chamayou and Yeol Eum Son….

  • Tim says:

    Maybe she’d misplaced her musicality?

  • john Kelly says:

The semi salacious tone of the above is entirely inappropriate, and most certainly in my opinion a solid Me Too violation by someone who should know better.

    • Mick the Knife says:

Saying an entertainer is “looking gorgeous” is a “metoo” violation? Thats twisted!

      • John Kelly says:

“a pre-concert massage was provided by a very happy, suitably qualified male member of the first violins.”

Why would he be “very happy?”

        Who’s twisted now?

        • Anon says:

The LSO first violin member is qualified and certainly helps his colleagues should anyone need some manipulation! Humour essential in today’s world, and Yuja has tons!

        • Enquiring Mind says:

I read it that he was happy to do her the favor because he has training in massage therapy. What did you think – a dude with his tongue hanging out ’cause hes got his hands on Yuja?

      • Jack says:

No, but what does it have to do with classical music? Which of course fuels the silliness of calling this a serious source of information on the field.

      • Bruce says:

It’s his opinion. He’s entitled to it, as you are to yours.

  • Mark Atwood says:

It’s funny how you always have the most up-to-date photo of Yuja Wang when you make a post of her nearly every day, but you can’t find one of “other” performers and use photos that are a decade old.

  • Karl says:

Where do I apply to be Yuja’s massage therapist!??!?!

  • John Borstlap says:

My fly on the wall tells me she was checking Slipped Disc on her tablet and forgot the time.

  • Hornbill says:

Apart from that,Mr Lebrecht, how did you enjoy the concert?

  • CYM says:

    Yoga Wang ??

  • Scala78 says:

And incidentally, what did she play? A gorgeous SHORT opus? What about the stylish Gautier?

  • LondonPianist says:

“Sources reported that (on that occasion) a pre-concert massage was provided by a very happy, suitably qualified male member of the first violins.” WTF is wrong with you?

  • Sue Sonata Form says:

She might have had an accident getting into her dress.:-)

  • feet says:

Ms. Wang has such gorgeous legatos!

  • Greg Bottini says:

    Yuja
    Brains, talent, beauty.
    The total package.

  • Robert Holmén says:

If the audience was kept out of the hall during the delay that suggests something onstage was being fixed.

    Perhaps the piano needed attention.

  • muslit says:

Looking ‘gorgeous’ is Yuja’s forte. The rest can be forgotten.
