  • I hope it will be finnished before april and the begining of the Ring, the big évent of the year and the farewell of Jordan to Paris after 15 marvelous years

France is a total embarrassment, on so many levels: human, social, political, environmental…the list is too long. What the world is seeing is French people in terror of entering, adapting and living in the modern world, for all its negatives and positives. They look and behave like silly scared children throwing tantrums and doing everything possible not to face the reality of life in the 21st century. As a dear friend of mine, a brilliant psychiatrist and keen observer of the human condition said to me, “France is the world’s largest kindergarten, full of nasty, spoiled, undisciplined, uncivil children of average and low intelligence who manage to combine two of the worst human traits, stupidity and arrogance.” After having lived in France for seven years and finally escaped, I sadly must agree with him.

      • John Borstlap says:

But hasn’t it been like that all the time? Hence the cultural highlights, the endless row of brilliant men and women, the invention of civilisation and cuisine and guillotine, and amazing art and architecture, literature, poetry and, yes, music.

Also it depends where one lives. I look back upon my time opposite the Jardin du Luxembourg with pleasure, the only problems were the squeeking of the parquet floors and the insanity of the neighbour who tried to burn down the place every now and then. But you get used to these things, even in the middle of the night.

  • Madeline says:

    Well done!!!!!

Who cares about enjoying great art?

Destroying jobs every night while complaining like children is so much more important and…PROGRESSIVE!

    • Sue Sonata Form says:

Macron could bring the people of France together by talking to them and not engaging in wholesale condescension of the kind we see in most democratic nations these days. After all, those people who supported the Revolution are just ‘oiks’ (and ‘deplorables’) after all.

Here’s an excellent way of garnering political support; tell the people they’re all idiots and that you know best. They’re sure to follow you over hot coals (cough) in bare feet after that – right into hell.

      • John Borstlap says:

        A nonsensical comment.

French protests against the government reforms are unfair: there are many groups out there who a) don’t understand the reforms and b) want to have their cake and eat it.

The taking of the Bastille in 1789 has created a tradition of moral outrage which has become an irresponsible hobby and an excuse for vandalizing. What do the majority of the french want? Le Pen? Where they very happy with Sarkozy? These protests merely confirm Macron’s vision that France has to be drastically reformed. He was hailed as France’s savior and when he began to implement the promises he had clearly outlined in his election campaign, suddenly he was turned into a ‘tyrant’. The ‘revolutionary spirit’ hides something much darker than the appeal of justice, an aspect that Irish/British philosopher Edmond Burke had already seen before the french revolution turned into a lethal machinery. If Macron is ousted, the country will sink into a real chaos, different from the current street theatre.

      Petulant child.

  • Paris is not in strike everywhere this week. In two evenings Chailly received two triomphes with la Filarmonica della Scala there at la Philarmonie de Paris.

    • david hilton says:

This only means that La Philharmonie must not have employees with long-term state pension entitlements at risk, in the way that many employees at the Opéra are affected. The strike continues in full force.

  • david hilton says:

Surely, at this point the news will be when/if L’Opéra de Paris is ready to announce that a performance will actually be given.
