The distinguished scholar of French Baroque music, Albert Cohen, died on December 31 at the age of 90.

On the very same day, his daughter Eva Denise Cohen died suddenly from septic shock arising from pneumonia. She was 54.

Albert Cohen, Brooklyn born, was chair of the department of music at Stanford University from 1973 to 1987 and a copious contributor to New Grove.

  • So sorry to hear such sad news. Dr. Cohen was my theory professor at the University of Michigan and what a great teacher he was and such a dear and generous man! I always treasured his wisdom and friendship. Sincere condolences to his devoted wife Betty on the loss of her beloved husband and beautiful daughter. Keeping you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.
