The Canadian soprano Barbara Hannigan has withdrawn from Hamburg’s upcoming run of Berg’s Lulu due to a personal beareavement.

She will be replaced in Christoph Marthaler’s production by Mojca Erdmann.

UPDATE: Ms Hannigan has posted: I am sad to announce that I have had to withdraw from the upcoming remount of our wonderful Lulu production at Hamburg Staatsoper. My mother passed away suddenly and recently, and it is necessary to now take the time to honour, reflect and recover during this moment of passage. I loved creating this incredible production with our team led by Christoph Marthaler and Kent Nagano, and will miss it dearly. But Lulu will understand. I wish my dear colleagues inspiring rehearsals and performance, and send all my best wishes to my replacement, Mojca Erdmann.

How could any rational human being criticise an artist for withdrawing from Lulu due to bereavement? Do they not understand the total immersion needed to undertake a role such as this? Ms Hannigan “inhabits” Lulu. She couldn’t do it when her mind and emotions are elsewhere. Have a heart, Silversled!
