German pianist dies, 84
mainThe Eurojazz trailblazer Wolfgang Dauner died this week in Stuttgart where, in the 1950s, he started out playing trumpet in American service clubs.
He formed a celebrated trio and, ultimately, the United Jazz and Rock Ensemble with Albert Mangelsdorff, Charlie Mariano, Ack van Rooyen and Eberhard Weber.
Some of his compositions were premiered by the Austrian-based US conductor Dennis Russell Davies.
This is sad news indeed. His participation, on acoustic piano, on (in my estimation) Jean Luc Ponty’s greatest ever album, “Sunday Walk”, on the MPS label, with virtuoso bassist NHOP and signature Swiss drummer, Daniel Humair, is enough for him to have written himself a page in jazz history all his own. R.I.P.
I couldn’t agree more. What a fantastic record it is. Thanks to Norman for publishing this tribute to a great jazz pianist. I also love his playing on Albert Mangelsdorff’s “A Jazz Tune, I Hope” from 1978, with Eddie Gomez and Elvin Jones.
