We hear that Hrachuhi Bassénz has cancelled tonight as Violetta and Simon Keenlyside as Germont at the ROH Traviata.

The scrambled relacements are Dinara Alieva and George Gagnidze, the latter making his ROH debut.

What a way to start the year.

Toi jolly toi.

  • MusicBear88 says:

George Gagnidze has sung over a hundred times at the MET including 25 Rigolettos and 25 Scarpias. Compared to those roles, Germont is a walk in the park.

  • Andy says:

Dinara Alieva was due to sing some performances as Violetta later this month anyway, so presumably that’s not a huge issue. ROH was billing that as her debut too so presumably this will be her debut?

  • Gil Ev. says:

    Traviata stars?

Judging by the image, it’s more like tattooed confused aging rocker man.

    • Yes Addison says:

The photo of Keenlyside is a still for Adès’s The Tempest, in which he was Prospero. Those aren’t real; they were for the production.

    • SMH says:

Perhaps you are confusing Keenlyside with Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden, who is a huge rock star and not confused about anything.

  • Mike Schachter says:

At least it’s an opera many singers will know

  • Eyal Braun says:

Dinara Alieva is magnificent. I heard her as Leonora (Trovatore)- in Tel Aviv- she made huge impression.

  • Joey says:

Maybe not a loss. A fine artist, but Keenlyside is not a Verdi baritone!

  • Lady Weidenfeld says:

They both sang magnificently and the public clearly thrilled! We were there and considered ourselves very fortunate Norman – a great way to start the New Year!
