It has been confirmed that the Irish film composer Eimear Noone will conduct an orchestra of 42 musicians in excerpts from five nominated scores at the Oscar ceremonies on February 9.

According to Variety, she’s the first woman ever to wield a stick at the industry bash.

Eimear says: ‘Thank you so much to the incredible Rickey Minor, music director for the Academy Awards and the Grammys for inviting me to participate in his musical vision.’

Cold Comfort for the total omission of women directors when quite a few of the year’s best films were directed by women (not necessarily American films), and lead roles for women were a sorry lot. Renée Zelwegger will win Best Actress for imitating Judy Garland (very well) but she is the clear-cut winner from a small field of underwritten roles (Scarlett Johansson does well in “Marriage Story” but her character is utterly unlikable and swamped by a virtuoso turn from Adam Driver). All the attention is on testosterone-oozing vehicles like the insanely overrated “The Irishman,” “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood,” “Ford v Ferrari,” “Joker,” and “1917,” none of which have lead roles for women.

Hildur Guðnadóttir has been nominated for best score, only the second woman after Rachel Portman (nominated 2x). So there’s that to celebrate.

The sad truth is that Hollywood makes films that sell tickets. If they are making a certain type of film it is because that is the type of film which generates revenue.

Is this about the gender or the person ?

  • SMH says:

Pity that she gets to be the first, a barely competent conductor. Surely there are better choices!

And dear god and an IRISH woman … what will those wild and crazy guys at the Academy do next?
