The mayor of Toulouse has renewed its music director’s contract by just one year to summer 2021.

Tughan Sokhiev has been head of the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse since 2008. He is also music director at the Bolshoi in Moscow.

It is a good thing he gives his full attention to Bolshoi & is not over extending himself. These days he is much better than Gergiev.

  • gg says:

From what I followed, he’s also a likely candidate for some other orchestras (Orchestre de Paris, maybe Concertgebouw…) so he’d have to leave Toulouse if he’s selected there.

If the main reason was to focus solely on Bolschoi, he would likely have told Toulouse’s mayor office long ago so they’d seriously prepare for his succession (which doesn’t look like what they’ve been doing).

The last element is that there are mayor elections in March 2020. So he may want to check who’s elected next year, and what will be the plans for his orchestra (and the future auditorium project).

    A one-year renewal leaves everything open…

Anyway, good luck for Toulouse to appoint the right successor… finding a young promising conductor isn’t easy and won’t work everytime.

“Finding a young promising conductor isn’t easy and won’t work everytime” – why does it have to be a rookie? What’s wrong with a 50+ candidate?

      • gg says:

In my opinion, Toulouse doesn’t have the prestige and won’t put the money to attract a first-league 40 to 50-old music director.

So, it seems likely they’ll either have to scout for a promising young talent and pray they’ll choose the right one, or be content with a reliable but merely second-league conductor. Either can be fine, but it’s still more unlikely than likely to be a Plasson/Sokhiev equivalent.

Or, much worse, they’ll get an untalented but media-buzz-attracting empty shell…

Best typo of the year. Wish someone had committed it when BoJo was Mayo of London.

    • Alexander Hall says:

Indeed. In German that is the default position in colloquial speech for mayonnaise and, like all nouns in German, is therefore capitalised.

  • Michel says:

Very good conductor. He has a promising future !
