“Every member of this [youth] orchestra was born after 2000”

    That’s really weird.

  • Bostin'Symph says:

While it might make the rest of us feel a bit old, it’s very heartening to know that the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain seems to be thriving! Best wishes to them and to the likes of Jess Gillan and Sheku Kanneh-Mason (MBE!) for carrying the torch.

  • Jeff says:

OM freaking G……. Can’t you say this about any youth orchestra in the world now? Hahaha

  • C Porumbescu says:

Ah, the Slipped Disc comments section. The only place on earth where, confonted with the NYOGB, people’s first instinct is to say something negative.

Seasons greetings and good will to you too, folks!

  • Karl says:

There are many extremely talented young musicians. Sometimes when I listen to the students at the New England Conservatory they sound as good as professionals.

  • David K. Nelson says:

At least some “youth orchestras” in the US do not permit those over 18 to still play, unless for whatever reason they are in high school. I am aware the rules and standards differ elsewhere.

It’s not that these youth orchestras make me “feel a bit old.” Hell, trying to put on my socks of a morning makes me feel a bit old.

Rather, it’s that they make me feel a bit untalented.

  • Sue Sonata Form says:

Wonderful that we have this fine, new generation of musicians at such a high level.

  • Tony Sanderson says:

Looking forward to their concert at London’s Barbican Centre on Sunday.

especially the East German composer, Hanns Eisler’s Auf den Strassen zu Singen, which I don’t know. Britten’s Sinfonia da Requiem and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 11 (The Year “1905”) make up the rest of the programme.

If you are from the Midlands, the same concert conducted by Jaime Martin, is on at the Warwick Arts Centre on 4th January.

How can anybody be born that recently? I don’t understand it.
