The US conductor Dennis Russell Davies is to be the next chief of the MDR symphony orchestra in Leipzig, starting now.

He takes over from Kristian Järvi.

After 15 years with the Bruckner Orchestra in Linz, Davies became chief conductor of the Basle symphony orchestra and artistic director and chief conductor in Brno, Czech Republic. UPDATE: We’re told he left Basle in 2016.

He is the principal propagator of the symphonies of Philip Glass.

  • Heribert Schröder says:

Dennis Russell Davies has been the Chief conductor in Basel from 2009 to 2016. The MDR Radio orchestra in fact is actually his second orchestra.

  • Johann says:

he’s not anymore in Basel. Ivor Bolton is music director in Basel.

  • Dave says:

I read “propogator” as “perpetrator”. But the perpetrator is actually Philip Glass.

  • fflambeau says:

He’s a very talented conductor and he promotes lots of new music, not just Philip Glass. Good for him!

  • FrauGeigerin says:

Norman, I think this not correct. He is MD only in Brno (and now also in Leipzig).
