The mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili who dropped out in the third act of Verdi’s Don Carlo at the Bastille this week has cancelled her participation the rest of the run.

Marina Prudenskaya will stand in.

Paris gets hit by more star cancellations than any other major opera house.

  • BP says:

The “rest of the run” amounted to one show (this Saturday).

  • antibandera says:

    Grotesquely unprofessional.

  • Joel Poblete says:

Anita Rachvelishvili is a mezzo-soprano, not a soprano.

  • Ignacio says:

I can only talk about my own suscription: Last season I had tickets in Paris for Les huguenots (Damrau and Hymel cancelled), Les troyens (Garanca and, again, Hymel, cancelled) and Tosca (Kaufmann cancelled). Only L’elisir d’amore’s cast wasn’t changed and both Grigolo and Oropesa did a superb job. So yes, there were too many star cancellations as far as I was concerned.

This October, Palais Garnier, La Traviata, 30’ late because of “technical problems”, after First act – “concert performance” because of technical reasons!!! Very poor!

  • AB says:

Come on! Rachvelichvili got sick. She honestly tried to do the last show and was not able to get through it. What is wrong and unprofessional about it? Your whole life as singer depends on two small vocal cords and if the poor woman is sick – nobody can expect her to sing the show. Especially Anita, who cancels only when it is really not possible for her to sing. How stupid and selfish is it to blame the situation on her!
She did not cancel the Paris show because she had a better gig anywhere else like some people do. It is the end of November and people catch cold. And let us wish her to get well ASAP.

Hear, hear. She’s certainly not a frequent canceler. Marina Prudenskaya is an excellent singer in her own right (rather different from Rachvelishvili, but outstanding in some of the same roles), so it worked out as well as it could have.

      • Ignacio says:

Yes, sometimes replacements are as good, or even better, than the replaced singers. Thinking of Lisette Oropesa replacing Diana Damrau in Les huguenots or Piotr Beczala replacing Alagna in Lohengrin. I think this might be one of those cases.
