Oper am Rhein is under water again
mainFor the second time this year, the Oper am Rhein has gone under.
Last time, its Duisburg house was shut for months after flooding from a faulty sprinkler system.
The source of last night’s leakage in Düsseldorf has yet to be determined but it looks like another long shutdown.
UPDATE: It’s the sprinklers. Again.
You’d have thought they’d get them regularly checked.
It might be that the damage is less than last time (cf. https://operamrhein.de/de_DE/wasserschaden-im-opernhaus-duesseldorf). So far, only two performances have been cancelled. However, the extend of damage (also to instruments in the pit) is still unclear. Keep fingers crossed …
La Fenice, on the other hand, has arisen from the waves, and pulled off it’s opening night “Don Carlo” on Sunday, apparently without even a single stage rehearsal of the new Robert Carsen production. All one week after record floods, and with near-record flooding still occurring most mornings. Not surprisingly, the small army of 50 or so technicians and craftsmen that Carsen brought on to stage with him at the bows received the biggest ovation of the night.
Venice makes sure that there is nothing important on the ground floor.
