BBC Young Musician adds New York award
mainThe pianist Martin James Bartlett, winner of the 2014 BBC Young Musician of the Year, has taken first prize at this year’s Young Concert Artists International Auditions in New York.
Together with three others, Bartlett, 23, now joins the Young Concert Artists’ roster, receiving 3 years management services, publicity and career guidance, as well as recital debuts in New York and at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC.
Congratulations to him. He’s a really really fine pianist. Mine is an untrained ear I’m afraid but he seems to really have something. I heard him play in Bournemouth just after the BBC win and he was great, and his CD is great too. I suspect he’ll have lots of success.
Congratulations to him . I have only heard him on R3 and seen him in one or two masterclasses, but he strikes me as someone whose playing is attractive, musical and avoids the piano smashing pyrotechnics which have, sadly, become all too common . I hope he will have a frutiful career
Have you seen the RCM Masterclass with him and Andras Schiff (Schubert Impromptus). Very very good, from both parties! And quite amusing.
Pianist Albert Cano Smit also won First Prize at the recent Young Concert Artists International Auditions along with Martin James Bartlett (https://www.yca.org/auditions/). Smit had tied for First in the 2017 Naumburg Competition. I’m looking very much forward to hearing him play live for Steinway Society – The Bay Area on December 8.
(Full disclosure: I’m on the Artistic Committee of the Steinway Society, and had strongly advocated Smit over a year ago, having found his playing very poetic. We hired him then for his upcoming recital—and then on Nov. 17th came the delightful news of his YCA win!)
