Orchestra quotes bad reviews to sell seats

We can’t quite see the point of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment’s new promo video.

But two of the negative comments it presents are from Slipped Disc, so it can’t be all bad.

Comments

  • double-sharp says:

We can even guess which particular SD regulars have been cited here.. Let’;s hope they keep away from live music events in future

  • Esther Cavett says:

Maybe SD should promote itself by quoting the criticisms it gets from disgruntled readers.

  • V.Lind says:

None of it is bad. It’s clever and original.

  • Leporello says:

Love it! Where do I get tickets?

  • Patrick says:

Brilliant! Anyone who disagrees should be transported to Australia.

  • Steven van Staden says:

I think this is a wonderful idea. The reason for highlighting the bad reviews is clear to me.

  • PHF says:

Well, they certainly need someone to enlight their PR and campaigns. Typical case of irony backfiring.

  • Anon says:

I found the video clever and cheeky.

  • Willymh says:

‘”A statue has never been erected in honor of a critic.

    Jean Sibelius

  • The View from America says:

SD is most definitely the place to go for negative comments.

  • Brettermeier says:

“We can’t quite see the point of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment’s new promo video.”

    Don’t you?

  • Bruce says:

    Haha, brilliant. Love it.

  • John says:

Neither can audiences, apparently. I made it less than 1000 PAX for their lack-lustre Elijah at the RFH on Thursday night. Doesn’t half beg the question, really…

  • joel stein says:

Right out of Slonimsky’s Lexicon-and they don’t include bad reviews of the OAE which would have been much more fun, if counter productive.

  • BrianB says:

Delightful. And, by the way, Dennis Brain was able to make a hosepipe with a funnel stuck in it sound pretty damn good at the first Hoffnung Festival.

    • will says:

Although true, that has got nothing to do with the OAE, I’m glad to say! Dennis Brain was a genius; are there any ‘geniuses’ in the OAE? I think not. As for their ‘lack-lustre’ Elijah: please don’t blame only the ochestra for goodness’ sake! The buck stops with the whole team, in descending order: 1) Conductor 2) Soloists 3) Choir 4) Orchestra. OK?

  • Anon says:

Brilliant! OAE, as usual, is in top form with their publicity. They have some terrific, creative minds at work there.

  • John Dalkas says:

The message I hear is, “Be bold, be daring. Share our journey and make up your own mind.” Brilliant! Made the OAE get my attention from the get-go and stand out in a field of predictable, sleep-inducing advertising around classical music.
Reminds me of Apple’s great “Think different” campaign. That turned heads and established Apple as a maverick brand.
Whoever signed off on OAE’s advertising strategy should be congratulated. I hope the orchestra’s management now has a plan for measuring its impact on ticket sales.

  • Edgar Self says:

Another vote for the wildly off-topic mention of the Hoffnung Interplanetary Music Festival and Dennis Brain. Remember “Functional Analysis of Bruno-Heinz JaJa’s Punkt-Kontrapunkt” and “Metamorphosis on a Bedtime Tune, Bon Vita”?

  • Petros Linardos says:

The could be attracting attention. Which is probably why they landed in this blog in the first place.

In a better world, the OAE shouldn’t need that advertising nonsense: it’s wonderful and thought provoking work should speak for itself. I cherish some of they recordings I own and memories of a wonderful concert of their I attended years ago

  • John Wills says:

I found them rather amusing. So serious and righteous.
