The Times reports today that conductor Muhai Tang suffered an embarrassing loss of trousers while leading the La Scala orchestra at the Teatro Dal Verme in a concert for the People’s Republic of China’s 70th anniversary.

Happily, he was wearing rock-solid boxer shorts.

You can watch video of the incident here.

  • Sue Sonata Form says:

Perhaps he was tired of the usual emperors with no clothes and wanted to make a point.

  • Old Man in the Midwest says:

Good thing this wasn’t during the Dance of the Seven Veils, or there might have been more to this story.

  • Boxers Rebellion says:

    This mishap was not briefs.

  • fflambeau says:

Maybe pasta is not to his liking?

  • sam says:

What it shows is the utter inutility of a lot of conductors: the orchestra is not watching you, the orchestra is not following you, the orchestra doesn’t need you, you might as well be eating a plate of spaghetti on the podium.

Even absent the pant incident, can you imagine if Karajan all of a sudden drops his arms and bends over, the Berliners would’ve come to an immediate halt.

  • Ruben Greenberg says:

This experience goes a long way in justifying the belt-tightening measures of so many orchestras.
