The Dutch violinist Janine Jansen played the Tchaikovsky concerto with the Berlin Phil and Paavo Järvi last night after a stop-start, injury-ridden year.

At her best, she is untouchable.

We hear she was at her best.

  • Gustavo says:

So was Paavo the other day in Zurich.

  • Heini says:

It will be streamed live tomorrow on the Digital Concert Hall.

  • Bruce says:

Who cares. The important question is, WHAT WAS SHE WEARING???

  • John Dalkas says:

“At her best”? Maybe I’ve missed her off days. I’ve heard her only twice, both times in Paris, both times outstanding.

The first time with Argerich and Maisky she far outshone them with her elegance and musicality. The next time she played the Brahms concerto brilliantly despite Harding’s stultifying conducting in his last concert with the Orchestre de Paris at the Philharmonie hall.

I’m thrilled she’s back, and count her among the great female violinists I’ve heard in recent years, along with Julia Fischer and Isabelle Faust, all class acts.

    • SVM says:

I would count Jansen as among the great violinists I have heard in recent years. No need for gender-based qualification (and I am puzzled at Dalkas’s inclusion of Faust, who is a fine violinist, but not in the same league).

    • Petros Linardos says:

One of today’s great violinists, period. In this context, gender is irrelevant.
That said, it’s delightful to see on stage a great musician, who looks and acts with dignity, and happens to be a beautiful woman.

  • BG says:

The impulse to assess Jansen (or any musician) in a gendered category is unfortunate. Jansen is in the top rank of living players regardless of gender.

What is the orchestra in the photo? It does not look at all like the BPO. Probably it was a major rotation week and they got some Academy students and whoever was free, way down on the roster of extras. Happy to see Janine Jansen back!

  • Karl says:

She looks shattered. This appearance took place under a lot of pressure. Yes she did well !
