A member of the Nuremberg Staatstheater has gone on trial for four counts of rape. At least one of the victims is still a schoolgirl.

The man, 51, cannot be named. He has refused to testify at the trial, which began today.

  • John Borstlap says:

These singers take opera plots and Regietheater much too seriously.

    • Mr. Knowitall says:

Very witty! Rape is hilarious, especially of minors. Well done, Professor.

    • Randy says:

FYI, comments like these on this website have led to many musicians personally vowing to never perform your music. I thought you might like to know.

      • norman lebrecht says:

Were they performing it before, or is this just free bile?

        • Charlie Marks says:

The bile being Borstlap’s disgraceful comment, or attacks on his irresponsible comment?

          • John Borstlap says:

People who take such simple irony seriously and get worked-up about it, would be the wrong people to play the music. It’s not for them, neither are the comments.

          • Charlie Marks says:

Ironic, is it, to make a joke out of rape allegations? Or is it hubris, demonstrating an inner misogyny? (Indeed this same misogyny is easily seen in the posts of those pretending to defend such stupidity, (i.e. pretending to “read” the crass comment as if it were some work of higher literature).

          • John Borstlap says:

I know, it’s all very difficult. But with an ‘esprit d’escalier’ one only makes very slow progress.

          • Charlie Marks says:

Or one becomes a rape-apologist because of the stupidity one writes on forum threads, eh?

  • Anon says:

Where are Karl the Misogynist and Sue Snide Farm? They’re usually so ready to jump in and blame the victims or call them liars. Not this time?

    • Claudio says:

Wondering the same thing. They will probably have a collection of excuses: the women only made the accusation to make some money, they took too long to report the rape, their names are not in the press therefore they are lying, this is a conspiracy to destroy this poor man’s reputation, he is an amazing singer so how could be a rapist, he never laid a finger on me so obviously he’s innocent…

    • Karl says:

He’s getting a trial. Many men don’t. It’s good that they are not naming him too. The accused should have the right to anonymity in these cases.

  • John Borstlap says:

The thought bubbles-up that there might be a connection between these truly distasteful stories and the stories about abuse at music schools. Could there be something structurally ‘vulnerable’ in music education which prepares the ground for misbehavior later-on in performers’ careers?

Would musicians, statistically, be more vulnerable to emotional imbalances, in comparison to other professional groups, like plumbers or taxi drivers? Would the high emotional pressures which are part and parcel of musical careers, the reason for such boundary-crossing behavior? And is the educational trajectory an ‘ideal’ context for cultivating such behavior? It seems to me that this could be quite possible.

    • Claudio says:

Please come out of your little bubble, John. There is sexual abuse in pretty much every sphere of life. In the church, in the military, in the film and television industry, in sports (remember that monster Larry Nassar?), in medicine, in higher education, in the penitentiary system and in public transportation (including taxis, yes). Anywhere there are power unbalances and monsters willing to use their power to hurt and use other people, there will be sexual abuse.

That’s why this abuse needs to be called out and acted against every single time, even if that means standing up to the pathetic misogynists and abuse apologists.

      • John Borstlap says:

        Agreed.

But surely the impression that it is much more endemic in the arts, may be a true one, also the seriousness seems to be greater. Possible reasons – apart from the obvious ones already mentioned: less social control, less inhibitions, more ego cultivation, and more façade building.

And spare me your unnecessary bubbles, I know other working spheres all too well.

        • Claudio says:

Sure. And maybe you could spare us your disgusting jokes about rape?

          • John Borstlap says:

Fyi: they were about the stories, not about rape. Reading and understanding are two different things.

          • Charlie Marks says:

You are responsible for the language you choose to use. You “joked” about a rape allegation that has now ended up in the courts. No ifs or buts. You chose to make a joke of a rape allegation.

Abductively, if it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then, probably, it is a duck.

Your revolting “joke” is that duck.
