The French violinist Renaud Capucon, horrifed by the fire that destroyed part of the iconic cathedral last April, has raised more than 100,000 Euros in a concert tour of six other cathedrals – Chartres, Saint Jean-Baptiste de Lyon, Reims, Saint-Germain des Prés à Paris, Notre-Dame d’Amiens and Saint-André de Bordeaux.

Other artists taking part included the viola players Gérard Caussé and Adrien La Marca and cellists Edgar Moreau, Victor Julien-Lafferiere and Julia Hagen. More than 5,000 people attended the concerts.

Well and good, but so much money has already been raised for Notre-Dame that this particular contribution is totally superfluous. This site alone has collected over 11 million euros as of today: https://www.peter-paris.com/products/collecte-internationale-pour-notre-dame-de-paris-dons. There is no shortage of funds for the restoration of Notre-Dame de Paris. There is a shortage of funds for other cathedrals and churches in France, though! Just an example among literally thousands: the glorious church of Rouffach (population: 4.500) https://www.dna.fr/actualite/2019/06/19/un-appel-a-dons-pour-offrir-un-nouveau-visage-a-l-eglise-notre-dame-de-rouffach

Imagine if the Amazon rainforest were a Parisian church how much money would be raised to save the lungs of the planet.

    • Jack says:

Then get to work and start raising money for the historic places you care about.

    • Sue Sonata Form says:

He meant well and if he didn’t do anything you’d also criticize that. Three cheers for philanthropic people.

    • CJ says:

Bravo Renaud and friends for that generous initiative and for the beautiful music (e.g. the Goldberg variations).
To answer the negative comment above:
      a) half the benefit will go to the churches in which the concerts were given
      b) there will never be enough money for Notre-Dame de Paris. Much of the money you mention are, up to now, just promises, some of them could very well not be fulfilled.
Moreover, the cost will certainly be much higher than initially foreseen.
It happens already with modern opera houses, so you can imagine with a XIIth century cathedral. Many
additional difficulties will arise during the restoration.
As Renaud Capuçon said in an interview, in response of criticism: “Some people criticize, I prefer acting.”

The full press release also notes that each Church and Cathedral that hosted the concerts will also benefit from the funds

  • Anon says:

The fire was in April this year..

  • mary says:

When Notre Dame burned, it burnt and spewed out 460 tons of lead into the air that spread across Paris, polluting streets and schools and playgrounds that had to be closed and cleaned.

The state is still not making public the lead testing results in children, residents, rescue responders, workers.

Notre Dame is a toxic site, a long-term environmental threat, an anachronism of patriarchy and sexism, that should be razed.

    Jesus would want that.

  • sam says:

His name is not Capucon, it’s Capuçon (soft c).

To the French eye and ear, it’s the equivalent in English of seeing and hearing Millicunt, instead of Millicent.

    (Sorry.)

  • Edward says:

The fire was in April not October

  • guest says:

    Last October?

    You meant April…?

  • double-sharp says:

Pity it couldn’t be for a for a worthwhile cause

  • Straussian says:

This is the kind of news we love but don’t get enough of. A testament to the goodness in humanity, and the power of music. Bravi tutti

  • George says:

He wanted to raise money for Notre Dame. He raised 100.000 Euros putting his time and heart into these concerts. And the first comment here is already about what is wrong with that.

  • Patricia Demirjian says:

What is wrong with you to diminish what this gentleman and his colleagues did?
Furthermore, I doubt that 11 million euros will make a dent in the overall cost.

Kudos to Msr. Capuçon and all who performed with him for your talent and generosity.

Victor Julien-Laferrière, be careful, wrong spelling
