From the press release:

The Philadelphia Orchestra launches its free ticket program for School District teachers, administrators, and staff. Designed to give back to those who devote so much to the children and communities of Philadelphia, APPLE (Appreciation Program for PhilaSD Leaders in Education) offers School District employees free general admission tickets to concerts throughout the 2019–20 season. Participants can register at www.philorch.org/apple to receive weekly e-mails regarding concert eligibility.

  • A beautiful idea. Please forgive me if I steal it

  • Stringfellow says:

People making $50,000/year are not the ones who need free tickets. Gotta love marketing departments.

    • Unstrung says:

Clearly you’ve never been to a single school in this school district. It’s the least the Orchestra could do for these teachers and admins. Gotta love stupid comments on this blog.

    • Enquiring Mind says:

Hand them out with food stamps? Then look at all the empty seats.

  • Mustafa Kandan says:

A very worthy project. I hope their next project will be to lean down the sound of this orchestra. When I heard them couple of years ago, I was very surprised by their sound. Is this the famous Philadelphia sound, renowned for their strings in Ormandy years. It now sounds very beefy, as if they have consumed too much hamburger, and brass too much out of control. Currently they are no match to Boston Symphony or Cleveland Orchestras.I haven’t heard Chicago Symphony since Solti years, when they also sounded too brassy.

    • NYMike says:

“Currently they are no match to Boston Symphony or Cleveland Orchestras”

You’re entitled to your opinion. Mine – on hearing all three @ Carnegie each season, Philly’s ensemble is still nonpareil.

    • The View from America says:

I’m sure the Philadelphia Orchestra will be spurred into action based on your important “change-agent” comments here.

  • Edgar Self says:

Teachers, yes, and I hope some for students also,– teachers could choose and bring them, or the PO could try some sort of application system, or the teachers a merit system for their students.

Times change. When Harl McDonald managed the PO, he stood outside the Academy of Music with passes for anyone in uniform.
