“The BBC. Nation shall not speak unto nation.”

  • Elizabeth Owen says:

Brilliant. Saw them in a different programme at the Usher Hall last week. Excellent evening and the conductor was so nice and fun.

    • Nick2 says:

He has a pretty average reputation. He’s a wheeler dealer who gets his way and his cash because of his connections with the leadership. How can anyone head up three large full-time orchestras – those in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, be Principal Guest with the excellent Hong Kong Philharmonic (a political appointment if ever there was one) and head up two major Music Festivals?

    • Allen says:

“the conductor was so nice and fun.”

Now we know where the great names of the past went so badly wrong.

  • Phok says:

A 2nd rate orchestra allowed to the Proms. Why?

Even the Rach symphonic dances sounded under-nourished. Best musicians non-Chinese, including the brilliant trumpeter in this utterly tasteless encore. Rest of the programme, even including Lu, boring. Lots of Chinese in the audience looking very pleased in their best suits. Financial backers?

    • John Milne says:

Oh come on Phok! I could not disagree with you more. I detect a hidden agenda with you here. Nor do I think you understand the spirit of the Proms.

    • Saxon Broken says:

Huh? The Proms have always had a mixture of “top orchestras” (well, by historical reputation anyway) and other foreign orchestras who are invited for a variety of reasons. Plenty of “second rate” and even “third rate” orchestras get to play in the Proms. And really, why shouldn’t they be allowed to fill out the programme?
