Great personality, also Grand Prix de Rome 1954. For the recent generations, he will be remembered as long-running harmony teacher at the Paris Conservatory, chief conductor of the Orchestre de la Garde Républicaine, and prolific writer for wind band and wind instruments.
Very sorry to hear this. I guess he is best known now for his excellent 1963 Divertimento for saxophone and piano. I well remember how tricky I found the job of learning the piano part and fitting it with the sax for a competition on little rehearsal.
