The Cleveland Institute of Music is cutting its head count from 430 students to 350.

Here’s why.

 

 

The US cellist Yo-Yo Ma performed today with traditional Korean musicians in the demilitarized zone.

The recital was held at Dorasan Station in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, near the North Korea border. Yo Yo Ma issued a call for peace and understanding.

A viola player who grew up with his mother and sisters in a Salvation Army refuge in Baltimore has won a major residency at the Eastman School of Music.

Jafrè Chase has won a full-tuition scholarship. He said: ‘I had the opportunity to leave Baltimore, leave Maryland, and I was good with that,” he says. “I auditioned at Eastman last February. I got out of the car in the parking lot across the street and looked at the building and was like, ‘Whoa, I’m at the Eastman School of Music.’ And when the teachers spoke of how they work with the students, it stuck with me. I really need that type of guidance.’

 

The violinist organised a small weekend gathering in New York to draw attention to allegations of rape by her late Curtis tutor, Jascha Brodsky.

She read out 400 solidarity emails. The Philadelphia Inquirer sent a reporter.

Performers at the event included Dan Cooper, Kristina Cooper, Emily Duncan, Camille Haris, Matt Herskowitz, Erik T. Johnson, Claire Lim and Milica Paranosic.

The 2019 Davidson Fellowship has been awarded to the American violinist Charlotte Marckx a Washington student at Colburn.

 

 

 

The music director has decided to leave in 2023, after 18 years in the job.

The Russian Yuriy Martynov has been banned from Ukraine after giving a Beethoven concert in Russian-occupied Donetsk.

He joins Valentina Lisitsa, Valery Gergiev, Denis Matsuev, Yuri Bashmet, Anna Netrebko and other prominent Putin-liners.

It used to be said that the voice reaches its peak at 50, but much has changed. Life expectancy has increased, people feel younger. Plácido Domingo is (nearly) 80 years old. So it does not look like this magical line still exists. I do not want to take any restraint and prepare myself for the old bit. But I do not want to cram my schedule so much that I can not enjoy life anymore.
