The gold-medal cellist Zlatomir Fung, 20, has been recruited by the Kirshbaum Associates agency.
The first American in three decades to win cello gold in Moscow, he joins the likes of Pinchas Zukerman and Andras Schiff on the ex-publicist’s list.

Heard him do a stupendous performance of Bloch’s Schelomo with Orchestra Iowa (the Cedar Rapids Symphony as was) back in June. The conductor, Timothy Hankewich, said we were very lucky to get Mr Fang because in another year his career will have taken off to the point that Cedar Rapids won’t be able to afford him! Three weeks later, he wins the Tchaikovsky.
Sigh. So true, BUT I’m not surprised at all. Kudos to the amazingly talented young man!
Well deserved!
In last Tchaikovsky competition for me he was most interesting and original musician from all players ( including piano).
I believe that Kirshbaum is still a publicist, Norman, in addition to managing artists. Emerson Quartet’s website has listed Kirshbaum as public relations.
Kirshbaum does both management and public relations. It says clearly from their web: http://www.kirshbaumassociates.com/
41 years since an American cellist took the Gold Medal in Moscow. Zlatomir is 20 and I was 30, just 8 days under the age limit. So he is 51 years younger than I. Feeling happy, grandfatherly, and honored to be a member of this two-person club in company with the great Zlatomir Fung.
With a name like Zlatomir Fung I’m not surprised his ancestors were among the first to land at Plymouth Rock…..
