The orchestra has had to replace the popular soloist for its opening gala with an unknown Finn.
Andre Watts, 73, is recovering after back and neck surgery.
His late replacement is Juho Pohjonen.
The Vienna State Opera is in mourning for Helmut Froschauer, who died today at 85.
Raised in the Vienna Boys Choir, Helmuth Emil Froschauer became one of its directors atb age 209. From 1968 to 1991 he was simultaneously chorus repetiteur at the Vienna State Opera, choir director of the Singverein, the Bregenz and the Salzburg festivals and choir director at the Vienna State Opera. From 1992 he was choral director at WDR and until 2003 Chief Conductor of the WDR Radio Orchestra Cologne.

Neil Williams, a chorus tenor, is suing the countryhouse opera festival for aggravated damages, having been dismissed after 15 consecutive summers. He says he was ‘discarded like an old rag’.
He wants £89,600 for lost earnings and hurt feelings.
Glyndebourne says half of its chorus are over 40.
The case is being fought against a backdrop of much turbulence in the chorus, which has seen three directors come and go in as many years.
