The pianist has made a Chinese promo video for a brand of luggage:

Another day, another deal.

  • fflambeau says:

Dozens and dozens of artists of all kind (movie stars; musicians etc.) do this. See the Rolex ads. It’s an easy way for them to make money and for companies to “raise their profiles.”

I’m afraid that your calling out a Chinese female for doing this means….you are a racist/and more. Are you? Then, if not, condemn all who do so.

    • M McAlpine says:

I would take issue with you calling Norman a racist. He has merely informed us of the ad this time, not commented on it as he usually does.

      • Joseph says:

Well, given Mr. Lebrecht’s continuous commentary on Ms. Wang and Lang Lang, and his overtly sensational articles and headlines about East Asians, regardless of birthplace (some articles have given the impression he thinks a Canadian or American of East Asian descent is identical to individuals born in China, Japan or South Korea), there is some degree of merit to fflambeau’s criticism.

        • norman lebrecht says:

How about my continuous comments on the US, the UK, Israel, Germany and other countries? Don’t be ridiculous, Mr T., or you will join the anonymous abuser in the spam bin.

          • Joseph Trivers says:

I’ll be more respectful in future posts. I’m sorry for offending you.

Regarding your continuous comment on the US, I have valued your coverage of strikes at orchestras, in particular. I consult Slipped Disc regularly as a springboard for further exploration.

    • John kelly says:

Norman may be many things (Tottenham Hotspur supporter for example…..), but a racist…….no way. Absolutely not.

    • norman lebrecht says:

You have no right, anonymously, to accuse anyone of racism, if you are not prepared to stand behind the charge and face the legal consequences. Normally, we spam out anonymous accusers. I allow this one to stand because it is both cowardly and preposterous. I am regularly in China and work with many Chinese people on a basis of mutual respect and progressive endeavour. This, sir, is your last post on Slipped Disc.

  • Nick2 says:

I am curious. What is wrong with musicians endorsing non-musical products? Is it right for basketball stars or soccer players but wrong for musicians? As I have written before, fot years Rubinstein endorsed Breguet watches. And almost every classical superstar appears in Rolex ads at some time in their careers. The Three Tenors even endorsed a Japan Airlines business class seat (even though they had probably never flown business class in their lives!)

  • Anon says:

Well, one needs to make money!
    Also, that’s a great ad…

  • Esther Cavett says:

    Pinchas Zuckerman advertised vodka.

  • Jan Kaznowski says:

I think that the great pianist Peter Donohoe should get out and do this to raise his profile. Instead he keeps fiddling with his website and currently has the strange comment :

“In the years since his unprecedented success as Silver Medal winner of the 1982 7th International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow,”

Err…why is this unprecented ? The 2 British Johns (Ogdon & Lill) both came joint first. Was the success ‘unprecedented’ for him because it was first time he’d entered the competition ?

    • Peter Donohoe says:

I have never fiddled with my website, Jan. But you are right about the two Johns; I never said it was unprecedented. I don’t know where that originated or what it refers to. But I am sure I am not the only artist whose biographies are written by others. And what’s it got to do with Yuja, btw?

  • aNOn says:

Ironic. Since she wears so little clothing.

    • david parrish says:

      so true.
flaunts her sexuality but we dont anything about her social life.men..women.or no social contacts?

  • Karin Becker says:

Is the young woman in the promotion video really Yuja Wang? I have doubts, because she is almost completely dressed. Missing in the film the trademark of Miss Wang: The pornographic nudity.
A pianist who prefers to cover 60% of her body with fabric at concerts at best needs no suitcases. A clutch is enough for Miss Wang’s outfits. In that sense, Miss Wang is not the right advertising medium for Rimowa’s products.

    • hsy says:

You really have a pathological fascination with her clothes, don’t you? I wonder why…

    • Robert Groen says:

Pornographic nudity?! You’re off your head! Anyway, if she is advertising a Chinese product so wearing Chinese dress does not seem out of place.

    • Debra says:

Yuja Wang is a virtuosic concert pianist. She’s actually very smart . She knew full well that there are so many pianists out there with similar musical virtuosic abilities. Her clothing and sometimes outlandish behavior on stage was her way of attaining to notoriety . I decline to pass judgment on the afore mentioned behavior. Finding other venues (such as advertising luggage) to generate income was very wise of her. It’s something to fall back on in the event of a financial emergency , which can happen to anyone .

      • hsy says:

“there are so many pianists out there with similar musical virtuosic abilities”

        That is simply untrue.

  • Alexander says:

strike Yuja, strike ( while iron is hot ) 😉

  • M McAlpine says:

Great ad! I wonder if she really catches the tune train though!

  • Dave T says:

Elevating classical musicians into popular figures is a good thing. Would the opposite be better, classical musicians are ghettoized, unknown, and ignored? Unlike the recording of a cross over album or duets with a jug band, there’s no hint of compromise to the music at all.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this.

  • Mock Mahler says:

Someone should mention those “What Becomes a Legend Most?” mink coat ads, which over the years featured Leontyne Price, Beverly Sills, Renata Scotto, Luciano Pavarotti, and Jessye Norman, among others.

  • Michel says:

Why not ? She could be sponsored by Dior or Chanel as well.

  • T. Wilson says:

This is to say nothing about her MERCEDES BENZ endorsement.

  • Bruce says:

Anyone remember the Blackglama mink ads? (“What becomes a legend most?”) They were big in the US in the 70s and 80s. They featured a huge number of celebrities, including a few opera singers: I remember Callas, Sills, Jessye Norman, and I think even Pavarotti. Those were kind of fun.

  • drummerman says:

Itzak Perlman did an American Express TV commercial.

  • Debra says:

During her solo career, Yuja Wang has done many things to become known as a classical pianist. It’s very difficult to make a living as a musician . I don’t see anything wrong with her advertising luggage to back up her career.

  • Anthony says:

After watching the video I have a strong desire to buy a set of that luggage

  • Luigi Nonono says:

Endorsements are a great way for musicians to make extra money, and spread recognition, but why give it to those who don’t need it?

  • Peter says:

I hope the endeavour works out. The world needs more green suitcases.

I’m intrigued by the Brand name: Rimowa. I find it pretty awkward in English.
Can anyone identify its origin, or in what language might it have resonance ?

    • Brettermeier says:

“The world needs more green suitcases.”

      Exactly.

“Can anyone identify its origin, or in what language might it have resonance ?”

I think it’s an acronym, something about Wikipedia Abstention.
