Vienna hauls soprano back from airport

The Russian soprano Elena Guseva was at the airport in Vienna after singing Aida the night before when she got called back to sing Desdemona the next night in Verdi’s Otello.

It was the closing night of the Vienna State Opera season. Luckily she had just sung the role in Moscow just last month.

  • Bob Boles says:

She’s a star! ⭐ She was an outstanding Desdemona in Moscow! Bravo, Elena!

  • Edgar says:

The stars aligned, and Vienna was given the precious gift of a divine Desdemona. That’s the stuff on which opera thrives.

Since Desdemona gets murdered by her Otello, this masterpiece won’t be staged in Australia in the future, I assume….? Lucky Wien…

[Just as an aside: They’d better do Janacek Down under, “From A House Of The Dead” – all male, set in a prison camp, with some of the male prisoners impersonating women in a bawdy scene. Entirely appropriate for a former penal colony…the history and syndrome of which it now perpetrates itself by being visiting the same penal colony upon migrants starving in remote areas or islands to prevent them from ever setting foot on Australian soil: the piece is most timely, and very easily set in such a prison camp on an Australian opera stage.]

The Russian soprano stars are all well prepared for the world wide career
