The previous rounds must have been grueling if only about sixty or so bassoonists made the finals! How many entered the competition – six thousand?

  • Wai Kit Leung says:

Doesn’t look like it is the final. Second round perhaps?

    • Tweettweet says:

These are the musicians allowed to the main competition. The first round will start in September I believe.

    • Max Grimm says:

Not even second round….the competition hasn’t even started yet. It will run from the 2. until the 20. September. The names Norman lists as “finalists” are actually the musicians who have been admitted to participate.

  • Philip says:

It is pretty striking that you could have such a long list of bassoonists and only one from North America and zero from South America or Australia/NZ. Norman is always on about gender balance at these things. What about geographical balance?

    • M2N2K says:

Surprisingly, you failed to be struck by the absence of Africa, not to mention Antarctica: for example, a few of those bassoon-playing penguins would have raised the cuteness level of the competition quite considerably!

  • M2N2K says:

It wasn’t my intention to place two nearly identical comments here. The first one didn’t look like it came through which is why I wrote the second one. Enjoying SD on my mobile phone became very inconvenient lately.

  • Trevor S. says:

The competition is closed for Russia and Ukraine?

    • M2N2K says:

Reportedly, Ukrainians demanded to have as many spots as Russians were getting while Russians insisted on having at least one more than Ukrainians. This difference of one could not be resolved and the competition decided to proceed without either country. This suited Russians just fine because Aleksander Griboyedov explained to them already two centuries ago that ФАГОТ (bassoon) was ХРИПУН and УДАВЛЕННИК (sounded hoarse and as if being strangled).

  • Phillip Sear says:

And we are told here in the UK that the bassoon is an ‘endangered instrument’! With such a large number of trained players in this competition alone there looks to be a ready supply to meet the requirements of orchestras and solo concerts for years to come – even if some countries have to import them.
