The New York architect Steven Holl, working with Nagata Acoustic, today won the competition to build a 1300-seat concert hall in Ostrava, the eastern town where Leos Janacek died.

Completion is scheduled for 2024.

The money will be provided by the City of Ostrava, by the Czech Republic, and by the Moravian-Silesian Region.

The design looks awful, something from a cheap sci-fi comic strip.

He might have died in Ostrava, but his town was Brno, where he lived his whole adult life. His home in Brno is a fine little museum (and tiny concert hall). The Janacek Theater is a huge, superb institute, having a big Janacek festival. Brno, not Ostrava is Janacek Town.

Please not another circus for music shows, what Toyota mostly is infamous for.

  • Karl says:

Check out his design for the the Musée des Collectionneurs in Angers. Looks like some bad dental work.
