Today’s Staatsoper audition was won by Andrea Götsch from Bolzano in Italy. She has been an academy student with the Vienna Phil and she conducts a bit on the side.
If she survives the probation years, she’ll be admitted into the Vienna Philarmonic.

Guy, we just need to see if she call “le Dolomiti” or “Dolomiten”. LOL
She will be perfectly trilingual if she comes from Bozen : the Tirolese dialect her mother tongue, then Italian (I’ve heard them switch from one to another over a cup of coffee) and German, possibly with a Viennese accent, by now. Good luck to her.

Italian clarinetists generally have a different sound than Austrian or German ones, no?
She plays what looks like an Austrian or German instrument, certainly not a Boehm system French style clarinet typically used by Italian players.
She would not have gotten this far if she weren’t using the type of clarinet the Vienna Phil./Staatsoper Orchestra uses. Instrumentalists are expected to match timbres, as well as pitches in Vienna.
And it is a 2nd clarinet/E-flat clarinet position which is Johann Hindler’s old position.
In 2015 Gregor Hinterreiter won this post and when Ernst Ottensamer died, he was later promoted to succeseed him as principal clarinet. So Andrea replaces Gregor in this position.
