From Billboard:

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME) is investing $500,000 in grants to local female musicians, an effort to support music made by and for women in a male-dominated industry.

The finances are part of the office’s NYC Women’s Film, TV and Theatre Fund — now renamed the NYC Women’s Fund for Media, Music and Theatre, as music is brought under its umbrella for the first time. Currently in its second run, the program has already awarded $1.5 million to 63 film, TV, theatre and digital media projects made by women-identifying creatives.

Newly-appointed MOME commissioner Anne del Castillo announced the funding Tuesday (June 4) at the third annual New York Music Month conference: Innovation at the Intersection of Music + Tech.

The last time I checked, the New York Philharmonic was female dominated. Women have always been fantastic artists; we just didn’t know it, as Mary Kay would say. Doors are just beginning to open wide. Cheers!!!

This inanity of equal (or in cases such as this unequal) outcome instead of equal opportunity (again in this case unequal) really must stop, it is completely ridiculous and fundamentally unfair.

    • FrauGeigerin says:

Absolutely: equality comes slowly and forever with fairness (in auditions, in scholarships, competitions etc.). Changes that do not come up naturally usually don’t last. Let’s stop pushing women into things we will come into naturally with fairness. Let my talent speak and stop caring about my genitalia.

  • Women or females? Females is grammatically correct, but sounds like the language of veterinary science.

Woman and women are primarily nouns, not adjectives, so we say female musicians. But some dictionaries now consider woman and women as appositive nouns which means that they can modify another noun like an adjective, hence the more dignified phrase “women musicians.” We can, of course, still speak of female musicians, but one gets the vision of a veterinarian lifting a saxophonist’s tail to see what gender she is…

  • Nick says:

Every act of De Blasio is an act of an idiot! The industry has been for years already female dominated and nobody complains about it. Men are happy about it. All orchestras, small chamber music groups, Broadway orchestras – all, but De Blasio is the worst mayor New York ever had! Hello, London – two nobodies at the helm of the two wonderful cities in the world!!

  • Debra says:

That’s a very nice gesture on the part of Mayor De Blasio. There are many talented and creative wonen in NYC. Thank you for helping some of them realize their dreams and make their contribution to American culture !

  • Luigi Nonono says:

What a disgusting lie. There are more female musicians than male, and they help each other, but never males.
