What a lovely couple! exclaims the lifestyle magazine.

In this week’s HELLO! magazine Lang Lang, the world’s most celebrated pianist, speaks for the first time about his spectacular wedding in Paris to fellow classical pianist Gina Alice Redlinger. The couple, who also share exclusive pictures captured before their wedding on the streets of the French capital, wed in an emotional ceremony at the Shangri-La Hotel before holding a reception at the magnificent Palace of Versailles. “It was one of the happiest days of my life so far,” Lang Lang, 36, tells HELLO! in the exclusive interview. “It was a truly unique experience.” Among the guests at the wedding were American musician John Legend and his wife Chrissie Teigen, Prince and Princess Michael of Kent and Sir Howard Stringer, the former chairman and president of Sony Corporation.

What, exactly, is ” the world’s most celebrated pianist ” ? And since when has Lang Lang been it, when there are other modest talents like Yevgeny Kissin, Grigori Sokolov, Nikolai Lugansky, Nikolai Demidenko – ( and that’s only the Russians ; I could go on at length ) – around ?

    • HaroldinItaly says:

Well said! I was wondering the same thing.

    • Waterloo says:

If Lang Lang is “the world’s most celebrated pianist” then HELLO! is “the world’s most celebrated magazine”? HELLO! is the best magazine you can buy. Their pulp paper is very soft and highly absorbent.

et ce ne sont que des russes!… Thibaut Dai, français, yudi li, yuja wang tous deux chinois katia biniashtivili géorgienne vivant en France.

I imagine it means the most household-namey. For “celebrated,” read “celebrity,” which probably is true. Hello Magazine is not the sort of publication to know the difference. Language is hardly their raison-d’etre — it’s a magazine for people who don’t like to read.

I think the man on the street would recognize Lang Lang’s name before any on your list. Most celebrated is more or less most famous. Why not give him his day?

    • Monsoon says:

“Hello!” magazine doesn’t know who Grigori Sokolov is? Someone get me my fainting couch.

    • Wladek says:

One can safely say that his homeland audience alone outnumbers the likes of Kissin, etc.
Demidenko who ?????? and if one thinks Lang Lang
doesn’t have a vast audience that adores him, think
      again ,,,,

    • Robert Emery says:

Norman said celebrated; not best. I’m not sticking up for Lang Lang, but he does better outreach to the non-classical community than other, and therefore if you ask 1,000 people on the street if they know Lang Lang or Hough, sadly Hough will be known by the minority. Hence Lang Lang is the most celebrated pianist living.

And no, I don’t particularly like his playing. Phenomenal technique, stylistically devoid of substance.

      • Una says:

Stephen Hough is a real pianist, modest as so.many British musicians ate, and a lovely person too. Not sure my neighbours would know either!

    • LEWES BIRD says:

To give Norman some credit, given the acid — and very just — headline (“…finds his natural home in Hello magazine…”) it’s pretty clear that “…the world’s most celebrated pianist” was equally tongue-in-cheek.

  • Sue Sonata Form says:

Some folks HAVE to think that some individual is a ‘leading’ celebrity, no matter what the field; they need this to hook them up to this or that cultural or sporting activity. There’s no doubt that ‘ratings’ are driven upward, and also demand, by the sense of ‘the best’ or the ‘celebrity’. It’s obviously an effective marketing tool which those of us who should know better recognize for what it is. Ergo, “the world’s most CELEBRATED pianist” didn’t expressly say “the best” or “the greatest”. I can live with that!!

  • John Borstlap says:

My fly on the wall tells me that the Parisian police had to stop ca. 650 yellow vests who came to demonstrate against the wedding because they had much less money to spend on such nice occasions. A small group of ultra-left hooligans had constructed a guillotine and had marched to the Versailles palace to intervene at the reception, but were intercepted and taken into custody. The contraption was checked at the police station and tried-out on a yellow vest, after which the maker was fined because it did not work properly.

  • Terence says:

How much does appearance and celebrity count for in classical music?

Too much I’m sure most would agree but when a young musician is getting established s/he needs to use everything including an appealing photo.

One of my favourites – Mieczyslaw Horszowski – would struggle to get a gig if he was young today.

  • Nick2 says:

I wonder how much Hello paid for covering this gross excess of ego and cash?
