The 2019 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World passed without a scrap of mainstream media attention until – at the final moment – Dame Kiri te Kanawa stepped up to present the prizes in a dress she made from a Zara Home sheet-and duvet-cover set.

Here’s a bed she made earlier.

Truly heroic of Kiri to save the competition with an act of fashion genius.

  • Keen Ned says:

Does this mean we can expect an obligatory song by Quilter in future competitions?

  • Alexander says:

She might reminisce of Scarlett O’Hara and her dress made of an old window curtain , and this time Kiri’s dress made a splash onstage . Hopefully BBC will take it into account for the next competition 😉

    • Mike Schachter says:

The BBC hardly fell over themselves to publicise the competition, probably bright young execs ignorant about music and everything else.

  • Nijinsky says:

    I like the colors Kiri.

I once read how Wolfgang, or his sister I don’t remember, played Tarot cards with a friend of theirs. Just a daily diversion like making a dress.

But when read that so many years ago, I thought: “Oh, that’s Kiri te Kanawa,” their friend.

Of course, that’s crazy, schizophrenic, Dadaist, nonviolent……

By the way, it’s a skirt not a dress.

NL, you should have gone to Specsavers !

  • Psychiatrist says:

I’ve seen many men dressed worse than this with no comment at all. Dame Kiri is a singer, not a teenager and gracious as well. She can wear what she likes as far as I’m concerned.

  • Bruce says:

    What makes this worth posting?

  • Ramon Figueroa says:

It might have helped not only to have a little more publicity, but to be able to follow it this side of the pond.

  • Wotan says:

The BBC’s attitude to THEIR Cardiff Singer of the World competition is nothing short of despicable. There was no obvious advanced publicity for the program on Friday the 14 June and almost no other broadcast coverage. By contrast the BBC gives us substantial coverage of women’s football and we are about to embark on a couple of weeks comprehensive coverage of Wimbledon tennis on all channels. Not that I’m complaining about such coverage but the balance between sport and culture (and, for that matter, education) is lamentable. The same complaint is relevant in respect of both the Young Musician of the Year and the up-coming Leeds piano competition. Surely the only justification for having a public service broadcaster, especially one that has allowed itself to be conned out a substantial pot of gold by having to take on the over 75 OAP license concession, is to follow at least approximately the aims set out by Lord Reith, that is “to EDUCATE, inform and entertain”. Musical competitions have to be recorded comprehensively since any one of the contestants could prove to be the winner. Broadcast this footage rather than the mind cringing crap which makes up so much of the BBC’s output.
