Jesse Rosen, President and CEO of the League of American Orchestras, is to retire in September 2020.

‘I will have been at the League for twenty-two years and CEO for twelve,’ Rosen told the League’s 74th National Conference in Nashville. ‘I’ve had an enormously fulfilling experience, but it’s time to begin thinking about the next chapter. The orchestra community has been a source of deep satisfaction and joy, and I’d like to remain a part of it in some new and different way.’

Message from MTT’s PR:

Michael Tilson Thomas announced today that he is withdrawing from all engagements beginning June 17 until September 3 in order to undergo a cardiac procedure. The operation, which will take place in Cleveland, is scheduled to follow his performances of Mahler’s Symphony No. 9 with the San Francisco Symphony on June 13, 14, 15, and 16.

“I deeply regret missing concerts and projects that I have been greatly anticipating,” said Tilson Thomas. “On the advice of my doctors, I need to undergo this procedure at this time in continuation of treatment for a heart condition I have managed for many years. I expect to make a full recovery in time to return to the San Francisco Symphony for the opening of my 25th season as Music Director.”

Previously scheduled engagements from which Tilson Thomas is withdrawing are performances with the San Francisco Symphony and appearances at the Music Academy of the West including concerts with the London Symphony Orchestra.

How attractive is this?

LPO Plus is free to join and new members will automatically receive an initial 100 points. 10 points are earned for every £1, and 1 point for every 10p spent. Each point earned is equal to 1p which can be redeemed against future orders.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports the death of Roger Covell, its chief music critic from 1960 to the late 1990s. He was 88.

According to the SMH: Covell’s role as a critic went beyond reviewing. He was a leading voice in the construction of a narrative around the emergence of a confident generation of composers in the 1960s, who drew inspiration from European modernism but wrote in a distinctly Australian voice. His landmark 1967 book, Australia’s Music: Themes of a New Society, charted Australian composition from colonial times to what he perceived to be the new creative energy and dynamism of the 1960s.

It appears that American Airlines has dropped its excess baggage charge for checked-in musical instruments.

You used to have to pay $150 for a tuba or a doublebass.

Now, it’s free.

(No guarantee, of course, that it will arrive in one piece.)
