First time I have heard London Symphony, it was under Abbado during an Australian tour. As it happens they played both Symphonie Fantastique and Mahler 5 in that tour. Although the string sound was leaner in those days, the concerts were magnificent. Along with Klaus Tennstedt and London Philharmonic Orchestra, they were the best orchestral performances I’ve heard for many years, even though I heard other orchestras such as (a rather brassy) Chicago Symphony under Solti. Under the inspirational direction of Simon Rattle, I am sure the South American audiences will have wonderful experiences of this great ensemble.

And not one work by a South American composer…..

    • MWnyc says:

I’ll hazard a guess that Simon Rattle suggested or offered one (it’s the kind of thing he’d do) and the presenters all said no, our audience wants to hear you play standards.

  • Dr Presume says:

why the painting of Rattle and the CBSO in Birmingham Symphony Hall, then?!

  • Eric says:

Sorry – what has this got to do with Paddington?

  • Mark (London) says:

    I’m
Sure the prices will allow only the wealthy to go to concerts ! When LSO toured Asia last year the prices were staggering ! It doesn’t deserve patronage

    • Saxon Broken says:

How do you think the money for touring should be raised? Or do you think the musicians should go unpaid?

  • Zenaida says:

For example: Top ticket price at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires for the LSO is 7000 = £ 118; cheapest 250 ARS = £ 5. IMHO perfectly acceptable. And about 95% sold out right now.

  • Alan says:

What a terribly tame programme. Touring programmes really are the pits.
