Congratations, Mikel!
One country where there is so little interest in Western civilisation, even among the most elite classes. Then, the local cultures are so rich, one can easily spend a life time just being immersed in them. For a western classical music practitioner to take up a post in India is not a great career move.
There’s room in India for every culture to thrive and there’s a passionate community of western classical music lovers. Diversity enriches everyone. The SOI is a terrific orchestra with a deeply committed management and audience and – in a nation the size of India, and a city as lively and wealthy as Mumbai – huge potential to thrive. I wish them every success with this new appointment.
