The new orchestra created for Daniele Gatti by Milanese plutocrats has announced an inaugural Schumann cycle:

  • Ned Keene says:

New concerts, which provided properly paid work for professional players, and concert repertoire (Schumann) that’s under-represented locally, can only be a good thing.

    • fflambeau says:

Nothing like the “new” Schumann; maybe that’s why the tickets are free.

I think this orchestra will be a big flop. There’s too much local competition: not only La Scala but also the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi plus the Milano Chamber Orchestra PLUS the Milan Conservatory’s orchestras and chamber music groups. All for a city that has less than 1.5 million people.

Italian’s love the opera; symphonic music: not so much.

      But good luck!

  • It is all good except that “Filarmonica di Milano” and “Filarmonica della Scala (di Milano)” are confusingly similar names.

    • Lorenzo says:

Andrew, I think that for the average italian spectator it won’t be difficult to distinguish the two orchestras, also because the Filarmonica della Scala has a very defined brand and never uses the definition “di Milano” in its name. Moreover, the new orchestra will perform under the abbreviated name “LaFil”.

  • Greg Bottini says:

Schumann – how imaginative and forward-looking!
How about a Brahms festival next?

    • Novagerio says:

What’s your problem? If you want “adventurous” concerts, go to hear a rookie, a semi-conductor without any conducting training or a female conductor (!)

      • fflambeau says:

I suspect GB is saying that for a new orchestra in a city which has several, the choice of Schumann was anything but inspiring.

Or to put it another way, in a city that has La Scala operatic programming is out but perhaps they can find a niche market but I doubt that’s Schumann (maybe modern Italian repertoire might work). Note that there is no concert hall mentioned as their permanent home (another huge drawback) and the tickets are free. This idea will go bust quickly once costs begin to mount. Italy is known for strikes, particularly labor strikes, so that is no help either

      • Greg Bottini says:

        I have no “problem”, Novagiero.
I was simply making a comment, which, by the way, can as easily be read as a positive comment as a negative one.
        Off our meds, are we?

    • Rgiarola says:

Petrenko first record in Berlin was Tchaikowsky 6°. It is just a first concert of a brand new orchestra.
I’m affraid you are considering #metoo’s easy path for lynching, regardless Schumann.

  • Barry Guerrero says:

    Nice.

  • anon says:

An Italian attempt to say we’re going to defy the world regarding the dignity of women? If so, it ain’t going to work.

    • Alan says:

What exactly was Gatti convicted of again? Or are mere accusations enough now to ruin a career?

      • Saxon Broken says:

He wasn’t “convicted” since that implies a criminal charge. He was fired, which is a civil matter. Hence anyone else can hire him if they wish.

  • Lorenzo says:

I am an italian musician and from what I understand it’s not correct to say that this orchestra was created “for” Daniele Gatti. It’s true, he agreed to conduct this new orchestra, but there’s no record he will be the permanent conductor. Moreover, using the derogatory term “plutocrats” to define the donors of this project is not exactly fair. Sure, it’s a private enterprise, but (in my opionon) to dismiss this orchestra as a mere ad personam economical product is misleading.

    • Rgiarola says:

      Lorenzo,
They are just chasing Gatti, since metoo is above all laws and legal procedures for all people that supports it. They like to be the accusers, judges, jury and executors of a thing they call “justice”. The prove about it? They never look for a real court and they even say it isn’t the place to find a solution for it. Civilized places call it public lynching in medieval terms.
It is NOT agains’t the new orchestra at all

      • Saxon Broken says:

Why do you keep coming out with this rubbish.

He wasn’t accused of a criminal offense, hence there was no criminal charge. Instead, he went through an internal disciplinary procedure because he breached the terms of his employment contract (allegedly, for harassing the female employees). He was free to dispute the charge/outcome in the civil courts, but he agreed in the settlement with the Concertgebouw that he had no case.

    So Gatti has copped LaFil…
