We hear that David Pyatt has been appointed principal horn at the ROH and will take up the position in the autumn.

Pyatt, a former BBC Young Musician of the Year, was principal horn of the London Symphony Orchestra from 1998 to 2012 and of the London Philharmonic Orchestra ever since.

I can’t understand him! First he leaves one of the World’s TOP5 orchestra (a thing that I would never do that) and now LPO to ROH! His action doesn’t make sence. And a fact that LSO has still open his position after 7 years. But I know that ROH is a great orchestra and his former LSO colleague Tim Hugh is also joining with the ensemble.

    • James says:

Maybe you should try 21 years of the kind of touring schedule that the LSO/LPO have while also trying to raise a family, and then you’ll know how little sense your comment makes…

    • Bill says:

Maybe he wants to play opera now? Clearly both he and his new employer thought the move had merit…

LSO foreign touring schedule is the worst of the London orchestras. LPO have a massive summer commitment at Glydebourne, which is not necessarily easy to get to. Plus they do a fair bit foreign tours too. And the BBC Symphony tends to be very busy in the summer with the Proms, just when someone with a young family wants time off. Playing for RHO offers same, easy to get to work venue. More performances of the same repertoire off a rehearsal block, so less music to prepare. And most importantly not much in the way of touring, which is great when you have a young family. Plus you get to explore the opera repertoire, and let’s face it when you’ve sat principal in major London orchestras as long as he has, you have probably played every orchestral piece worth playing for horn much more than once, so new repertoire to explore will make a nice change.

  • Simon Scott says:

I wonder how many viola players he will deafen?

  • Cynical Bystander says:

As pleased as I am to hear about his appointment in the autumn it would be nice to know what he will be playing in at ROH. May already and still no sign of an announcement. Maybe it will be out by the time we can book for an Autumn season more than a little shrouded in mists and mellow fruitfulness?
