Berlin: Yoncheva retires after one act of Tosca

We hear that  Sonya Yoncheva sang just one act of Tosca last night at the Berlin Staatsoper before leaving the stage. Ms Yoncheva is expecting her second child in the autumn.

She must have given advance warning of feeling unwell because Karine Babajanyan caught a high-speed train up from Hannover and arrived just in time to save the performance, which was conducted by Sonya’s husband, Domingo Hindoyan.

  • Usually, the latter months of pregnancy produce some of the best singing of a soprano’s career.

    • Maybe some good singing, but I’d bet flinging yourself off the battlements of Castel Santangelo wouldn’t do much for your unborn child (except perhaps hasten its arrival!!)

  • It is interesting in all my years of opera attendances in many opera houses, I have never experienced as many mishaps with singers as in this opera house. I wonder why.
