A Sicilian town commemorates a much-missed English composer

We hear from Schott Music that Joe Schittino, director of the Pietro Vinci Music Institute of Caltagirone, will rename the institute’s auditorium this weekend after the late Steve Martland.

Steve Martland, one of the great provocateurs, died in May 2013 at the age of 58.

  • Where would we be without provocateurs? Without their silly antics, audiences of music would stay in their comatose slumbers. But at the moment the many Beethoven- and Mahler-cycli become lethal, listeners turn to provocation to feel alive again, something which proved to be impossible with the aforementioned composers. So, for these listeners, music like Martland’s is a happy gift.
