I don’t care if they’re from Mars if they’re competent.

    • Amos says:

Competence is clearly a prerequisite for being offered any position but it is newsworthy when it occurs and the person is a member of a group that has been denied access to fulfill the endeavor. In this instance it is difficult to deny that until quite recently women conductors have been actively opposed by those in positions of authority. The notion that all qualified people receive equal access to employment is imo naive and/or disingenuous.

  • David H Spence says:

There has been nobody fully competent or even at times halfway so at the helm of DSO Berlin in a major position with them since 2010. Up through the spring of that year it had been Ingo Metzmacher and before that Kent Nagano, with the most mediocre of kapellmeisters in charge of the former E. Berlin Marek Janowski. Now with Vladimir Jurowski in charge of that, they observe Ferenc Fricsay’s legacy better than can the orchestra he founded anymore.

  • David H Spence says:

Ditto. …. in charge of the former E Berlin RSO Berlin, Marek Janowski, that was meant to say. The same RSO Berlin of course exists today, but, it goes without saying, Berlin is neither West nor East anymore.
