In his first season as music director of the Zurich Tonhalle orchestra, Paavo Järvi’s concerts will focus on his Nordic roots in Estonia, Russia,
Finland, Latvia and Sweden.

Opening with Sibelius’s Kullervo, he will go on to record the complete Tchaikovsky symphonies for Alpha, instal the Estonian composer Erkki-Sven Tüür as the orchestra’s Creative Chair and take parties of Swiss to his summer festival at Pärnu.

Details are just being announced.

Swiss are in safe hands once again. They have appointed Lionel Bringuier too soon, especially after such successful times under David Zinman. I am sure that Bringuer will have a happier next appointment.

David Zinman was fantastic and I’m sure that Paavo Järvi’ will be good too. It’s normal that he emphasizes music of his “roots”, much of which he has also recorded.

Zurich has everything that a great symphony orchestra requires.

  • Torsten says:

Lionel Bringuier is a disaster not only with Tonhalle Orchester, I know the true fact that he was also fired during the rehearsal period of Carmen with Opéra national de Paris! This is clearly the fault of the way the classical music business is run: greedy agents pushing hard on “not yet ready” and not enough experience “green” conductors…….similar cases with Alondra de la Parra, Diego Matheusz and many more…….all these young conductors being pushed to the spotlight too soon and too early and then they burn…….!

  • Sixtus says:

Glad to see he’s using the old seating plan–split violins, cellos left, violas right. Some of his recent recordings also employ this arrangement, to the overall benefit of the music.
