The new man in the hot seat is Aidan Oliver, who has has been Acting Chorus Master for the past month.

Aidan, 43, is founding director of Philharmonia Voices, a professional choir that works with the Philharmonia Orchestra under Esa-Pekka Salonen. He is also director of the Edinburgh Festival Chorus, which will involve some shuttling up the train schedules.

Stephen Langridge, Artistic Director of Glyndebourne, said: ‘We’re delighted to have made this appointment. The Glyndebourne Chorus enjoys an international reputation for excellence and Aidan’s pedigree and experience as a chorus director makes him the ideal person to guide the ensemble in to the future.’

Let’s hope so. The last chap departed abruptly and is seeking compensation.

  • David Edwards says:

    Excellent appointment! Good luck, Aidan

  • Jeremy Bines says:

A small correction: Aidan is Glyndebourne’s 4th Chorus Master in two years.

I left in July 2017 (to swan off to Germany, as I think you put it at the time) and Nick left in November 2018, whereupon Matt Fletcher took over as acting Chorus Master for two months.

Aidan started the ball rolling for the 2019 season a few weeks ago – and warmest congratulations to him for turning it into a longer-term post!

  • VB says:

Welcome to the Sarah Hopwood era, where people leaving and compensation claims are fast becoming the norm. The sooner she retires the better (and happier) people will be.

    • DW says:

Yawn. This anti-Hopwood rhetoric is so tedious, particularly as she has no input in appointing music roles such as the chorus master. God forbid she’d ever get credit from keyboard warriors for any of Glyndebourne’s many strategic successes…

      • VB says:

You would hope that someone who is all over everything would get a few decisions right. That doesn’t make her a good leader or manager though. And don’t be fooled – many a technical Head has griped about her interjecting herself on artistic matters she has no knowledge of. That’s what control freaks do.
