Breaking: New German job for Mirga
mainHaving stated loud and clear last week that she won’t be guest conducting for the next two years, the City of Birmingham’s music director has accepted a three-year artistic residency in Dortmund.
She has been designated an ‘exclusive artist of the Dortmunder Konzerthaus’, succeeding Andris Nelsons whose term ends this summer.

Where is her home? Maybe it isn’t a difficult commute. Just wondering.
Sue – have you also said that about Daniel Hope, Simon Rattle, and Jonas Kaufman? I bet those people believe that they have spent time raising their babies. It’s a tough enough place out there for women – lets support the ones who break through that glass ceiling. It’s also possible that she may not be the only person who had that baby, and that the other genetic half of that very cute little bundle might just want to also spend the time.

This likely just means a handful of concerts there each season with CBSO. That’s how it’s been with Nelsons — tour stops with the Gewandhaus.

John that’s exactly right – it’s not a job, rather it becomes an even more regular touring destination for the CBSO. And we are delighted because this hall is WONDERFUL

Nelsons has promoted a very healthy relationship between the Gewandhaus and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Nelsons will conduct the Gewandhaus in at least 5 concerts starting 27 October in Boston. This is the 3rd season of this unusual collaborative venture and, I think, a model for others. He is to be applauded, not attacked, for it. And no, he isn’t neglecting either orchestra: it’s just he is in much demand.
