I have noticed slowing down in ticket sales with Berlin Philharmonic in the last 2-3 years. Just a few years ago it would have been impossible to find any tickets this close to the concert. It is easier now to get the best seats, but it is not a good sign for classical music.

Livestreams will destroy live events the way uploads destroyed the record industry…

      • John Smith says:

Yeah, but there are hundreds of thousands of people watching and paying to watch every live stream, so as far as ticket sales go, Berlin Phil are sorted. A true 21st Century orchestra. Of course, many of the “streamers” have made pilgrimages to Berlin, myself included…

      • Violone says:

The cardinal misunderstanding in your post is this:

A livestream can only stream something if it actually exists as a finished, ready-to-broadcast product. With no LIVE OPERA to show, the streaming companies have nothing to sell, do they?

Do the math. Calculate how many orchestral players, how many chorus, how many soloists, how many music staff, how many lighting designers & technicians, how many wardrobe staff, how many scenery designers and decorators, how many stage managers, how many fire & safety officers, and…

… then divide the total cost among one broadcast, and tell us if live events have no future? Where else are you going to find the top-quality content subscribers demand?

Why are you surprised by this?

There isn’t a tenor singing today who can do justice to the role.

Yoncheva has been cancelling (although for understandable reasons) and I don’t think I’d ever pay money to hear Salsi sing Iago. He seems drastically over-parted in much of this repertoire. His GĂ©rard in Munich was, frankly, painful to listen to.

Regular Ticket prices are 38,- to 101,- Euros.
Berlin is not a rich city and there’s a lot of competition. If they are offering cheap tickets to students, BRAVO to them.

Baden-Baden Otello ticket prices ranged from 59-360 Euros, standing room available only if all seats were sold out. Which means as long as there are any expensive seats left they won’t open the standing room area although the audience is a completely different one; that makes it impossible for anyone who can not afford the regular prices to see the performance. I understand, Baden-Baden is not funded, but since they have standing room area they should at least offer them to students.
