The US radio show Performance Today has come up with this clumsy gong.

It has given the 2019 award to Joann Falletta, music director of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.

Fine musician. Very nice person. Meaningless title.

  • Amos says:

Recognition of JF’s ~ 40 years in the service of performing a wide repertoire of the orchestral repertoire is long overdue. It would, imo, serve a worthwhile purpose if this award leads to her substituting for MG-T with the PO so she can demonstrate with a world-class orchestra her life’s work!

  • MWnyc says:

It was probably given to her this year because she’s stepping down from her other longtime orchestra, the Virginia Symphony in Norfolk/Hampton Roads.

  • I think that is very progressive of them to honor a woman with this award.

  • Couperin says:

I hope your use of the word “fine” is to be read with complete eye-rolling sarcasm.

    • Bruce says:

…because any opinion that differs from yours must be based on stupidity (or, at best, ignorance of what is truly good). Thank you.

  • Rolf Erdahl says:

Excellent musician, exciting conductor, and community builder. The. Real. Deal.

  • Anon says:

This post comes across as rather sexist.

  • Spenser says:

Damning with faint praise, Norman, is how I read it.
    *sigh*

Oh, is Joann Falletta a woman? I hadn’t noticed. All I know is that she’s done – and continues to do – outstanding work as a conductor, regardless of gender. Why not “Classical Person of the Year”.
