Austrians name British chief conductor

The Symphonieorchester Vorarlberg has chosen Leo McFall, 36, as its next chief.

A finalist in the 204 Salzburg/Nestlé Young Conductors Award, Leo is a protege of Bernard Haitink’s with an Oxford music degree.

  • I did not know, until I looked it up, that it is the professional orchestra in Bregenz (I’m not up on my Austrian states). It might have been helpful to mention this.

    • It is a professional orchestra but not a full time, payed per project. Mostly mediocre concerts, although they did a splendid Mahler symphonies cycle with the Kirill Petrenko, who grow up in Vorarlberg.

  • Congrats Leo!! Well deserved. Looking forward to your Bruckner, Brahms, Mozart and Schubert among many other goodies with the Austrians!

  • Good orchestra and the reason Kirill Petrenko left Russia (his father played violin in this ensemble). KP still conducts them.
