Andrés Orozco-Estrada has cancelled next weekend’s concerts due to illness.

So Joshua Weilerstein will make his Philadelphia Orchestra debut.

The program will include Brahms’s Symphony No. 3 and Weber’s Clarinet Concerto No. 2, featuring Principal Clarinet Ricardo Morales, as previously scheduled. Caroline Shaw’s Entr’acte for string orchestra, in its Philadelphia Orchestra premiere, replaces Janáček’s Taras Bulba.

  • Kyle Wiedmeyer says:

Replacing Taras Bulba? Sorry, Ms. Shaw, but I’d be disappointed.

    • I’m with you on this one, Kyle. I’m assuming that he doesn’t know Taras.

      • Ms.Melody says:

Please explain the connection between this replacement and the character ( Tara’s Bulba) from Gogol’s quasi- historical novella about Ukrainian cossacks fighting the polish invasion.

    • Sixtus says:

The Janacek is indeed a loss. It is a stupendous piece. And this would have been a chance to hear the work with the real, large, pipe organ in Verizon Hall. The final few measures could have been tremendous. Alas!

  • Luis says:

He will replace David Afkham in next two weekends with the Orquesta Nacional de España. Worst than with Taras Bulba: the replacement implies postponing the premiere of a new work by Jesús Rueda, one of the most interesting current Spanish composers.

  • Barry Guerrero says:

Ditto. “Taras Bulba” is a great orchestral showpiece that rarely gets performed. It gets overshadowed by the equally – if not more – fabulous “Sinfonietta”. Even that piece deserves more hearings. More Janacek!
