The Latvian film and opera director Andrejs Žagars has died after a long illness.

Immersed in Wagner, he was director of Latvian National Opera from 1996 to 2013.

He owned several cafes in Riga and was a restless entrepreneur.

    He seemed to have vision and ambition for the Latvian National Opera. I understand that it was he who appointed 25 years old Andris Nelsons as Principal Conductor of the Latvian National Opera from 2003.
