It has just been announced that Anne-Sophie Mutter is one of three winners of the 2019 Polar Prize.

The other winners are hip hop artist Joseph Saddler, known as Grandmaster Flash, and the music charity The Playing For Change Foundation.

They’ll have a chance to get to know each other in Stockholm on June 11.

  • Pianofortissimo says:

Anne-Sophie Mutter is being called “the Queen of the Violin” by the vulgar press here in Sweden.

  • Caravaggio says:

Can’t they, and I mean all these classical music industry affiliates, find someone else other than A-SM to issue their awards? My God.

  • Mike Schachter says:

What are the criteria for this prize?

    • norman lebrecht says:

Like the Nobel, it’s awarded by nonentities.

      • Robert Groen says:

Oh,we’d better let you do the awarding then….
What is this irresistible urge of some of the contributors here to burn somebody down to the ground, just because they are successful, rich and/or German?

      • Saxon Broken says:

The science (and economics) prizes really are not awarded by “nonentities”, and go to reasonable choices. The peace prize, on the other hand, is given to some odd choices.

  • boringfileclerk says:

Congratulations! She could use the recognition and cash! Hopefully this will give her career the added lift it needs!

  • Amos says:

I recall a performance she gave of the Beethoven concerto, with Ozawa/BPO to commemorate some HvK anniversary, being the oddest I’ve ever heard. The tempi were consistently glacial interspersed with momentary and seemingly random accelerations. A similar performance style of the Brahms concerto with Masur/NYPO was explained/excused as a memorial to her then recently deceased husband. To each their own.

  • M2N2K says:

In her prime, ASM was definitely one of the best.
